The rise of eco-interiors: Highlights from Material Matters ‘24

02.10.2024

Material Matters made its return to London’s iconic Bargehouse at OXO Tower Wharf, bringing together over 50 leading brands, designers, and makers to celebrate design’s role in driving the circular economy. With five floors of material innovations on offer, we certainly weren’t short of inspiration. From a light made of orange peel to ergonomic furniture designed with tech-powered ‘smart foam’, here are a few notable mentions that captured our attention.

Studio Arp's orange peel pendant light

Studio Arp proved that food and furniture can go hand-in-hand with their eco-friendly pendant light crafted entirely from orange peel. Once dried and stitched together, the peel takes on leather-like qualities, offering a flexible yet durable texture - ideal for modern, mindful interiors. With further applications on the horizon, Studio Arp highlights the exciting potential of biomaterials in everyday design.

Crafting Plastic's stackable 'Sensables'

Another standout at the fair was Crafting Plastics’ ‘Senseables’ collection, consisting of stackable, versatile stools made from NUATAN - a biobased and biodegradable material. These playful pieces are designed for all ages, with the latest interactive version featuring a solar-active bioskin that reacts to UV radiation, changing colour in real-time based on the UV index. Alongside making each item entirely unique, this clever design raises awareness of solar radiation and invisible environmental threats through the material’s responsive properties. Crafting Plastics also showcased a lighting collection designed with a “no glue, no screws” policy, instead utilising materials that naturally degrade together.
