In The Big Rock, Design Academy Graduate Luuk Van Laarhoven looks to bridge the gap between humans of our ancient past and those wrapped up in the digital present, and seeming future, we find ourselves within.
That bridge comes in a metaphorical form inspired by the megalithic monuments raised by humankind centuries ago; a large, flat-faced rock.
Inspired by the landscape of Drenthe, a town located in the North East of the Netherlands, and the mysterious rock formations therein, his own monumental piece is actually made from metal.
Having heat-treated metal sheet, and with it changed its colour and appearance, van Laarhoven then went through a process of improvised cutting and joining, forming the plates into enormous ‘iron stone’ sculptures.
The crafted and high sheen pieces offer a sense of both the ancient past and the near future whilst potentially serving as a place of rest and contemplation once located in the natural environment. Much like the very stones that inspired them.
