Re Rag Rug started as an experimental design project in 2012 when collaborators Katarina Brieditis and Katarina Evans got together to make new, functional and decorative rugs from cotton they had salvaged from the T-shirt industry. The project started close to home – that being a small town in southern India, an area dominated by such manufacture.
The project grew through a very precise set of parameters that ultimately led to 12 large scale and beautiful rugs, each produced by hand in the space of a month.
Now permanently touring the world, the project offers the viewer an opportunity to question the impact of modern day manufacturing techniques in relation to handmade craft. It also makes us consider the value that handmade may bestow upon an object as well as underline a very important ecological concern, drawing our attention to the very real possibilities of recycling waste materials.
