There has been a great deal of hype surrounding the launch of Piñatex – a natural alternative to leather that’s made using pineapple leaves.
And frankly, we can understand why the material has received such a positive response.
Dr Carmen Hijosa, a consultant for London-based materials brand Ananas Anam, created the animal-friendly product from what would have previously been waste material. The revolutionary product utilises cellulose fibres, which are taken from a pineapple’s leaves – a by-product of the agricultural industry.
In order to make the material, the fibres are felted in an industrial process. This creates a fabric, which is flexible and can be printed and embellished – just like leather.
Piñatex has already been embraced by a number of fashion brands, favouring the more ecologically responsible origins of the product. Although the material currently includes a non-biodegradable top layer for extra durability, designer and creator, Dr Carmen Hijosa, is exploring the possibilities of a natural alternative to make it fully sustainable.
Alongside projects such as The Sea Chair and Alix Marie Bizet’s ‘Hair’ collection , Piñatex is shaping up to be an industry game changer.
Ananas Anam is also keen to stress that no pineapples are harmed during the manufacturing process… so ultimately it’s a win-win situation! Find out more at http://www.ananas-anam.com/pinatex/
