The second part of the UK’s leading graduate showcase, New Designers, features the most promising talent from furniture, product and industrial design, spatial design and interiors, graphic design, illustration and animation, motion and digital arts.
Having launched our brand new Material Lab Associate Prize, we were hugely excited to see that material exploration lay at the heart of so many projects.
From heat sensitive Jesmonite clocks to an innovative new surface made from discarded banana skins, these new graduates made our decision extremely hard.
After long discussions and many cups of tea, we are happy to announce that the winner of the Material Lab Associate Prize for Part Two is Sam Lander from the Manchester School of Art for his project Whirligig.

Lander not only considered his materials, but the full making process. Needing a centrifugal force to create his dramatic lamps and pots, his resourceful solution was to create a tool out of washing machine parts. Placing moulds filled with concrete and expandable foam into his self made machine, otherworldly, lightweight shapes were created.
We were particularly impressed with his innovative and inventive process, demonstrating a creative take on traditional concrete designs. This project could also be applied to commercial and retail spaces, where this colourful and lightweight surface could be applied in a variety of ways.
