Here at Material Lab, we’ll be bringing together some of the most trailblazing surface design studios to the beautiful Syon Park for 2015’s Decorex .
The show celebrates glorious craftsmanship within interior design, with many studios joining forces to produce an array of breathtaking surfaces and inspired material innovations. Since its beginning, the show has become synonymous with quality and this year’s theme, ‘The Future of Luxury’, offers us a chance to set hearts racing within the design community.
We’ll be teaming up again with Here You Are Studio, responsible for designing the space, and collaborating with Cut-tec , the UK’s leading laser cut and etch facilitators, to create bespoke signage and decorative panels to adorn the installation, alongside support with the flooring from BIC Carpets .
Be inspired by a wide variety of extraordinary brand new surfaces and meet with the designers who use state of the art processes to make glorious luxury surfaces at Decorex. Check out the full list of those involved in the one-of-a-kind event below…
Collaborating design and manufacture practices, Tactility Factory (TF) unites concrete and textiles using patented technology, to create decorative interior wall panels. The studio redefines the traditional relationship between textiles and architecture, infusing concrete with velvet, linen, crystal beads or stitching. With this technique, developed by textile designed Trish Belford and architect Ruth Morrow, the panels are given a multi-dimensional feel that can instantly transform wall surfaces.
Bringing together their uncompromising attention to detail, design duo Nathan Philpott and Jemma Ooi founded CUSTHOM studio in 2010. In honour of Britain, the studio’s work is produced exclusively in the UK, drawing on the quality, wealth and heritage of British craftsmanship. Combining inspiration from a variety of design disciplines, from typography to illustration, as well as experimenting with materials and processes, CUSTHOM has created many bold, graphic, tactile and timeless pieces. The ‘New Cross’ embroidered wallpaper will be shown exclusively at Decorex.
Inspired by visual journeys and the world around us, young textiles designer Gemma Kay Waggett carefully combines layers of colour, pattern and shape to craft embroidered and printed textiles. Waggett is also the founder of lifestyle pop-up brand, Nothing But Navy, where she continues to reinterpret traditional techniques for future environments.
The team at Giles Miller Studio focuses on ways to form innovative surfaces that manipulate light and shade, in order to illustrate texture and pattern. The diverse range of tiled surface solutions meld architectural elements with a beautiful interior finish, from bold logos to subtle patterns.
The bespoke textiles by Studio Moon can be applied with versatility across interior, fashion and product design – merging luxury fashion with surface design. Founded by Moon Hussain, the studio’s multi-disciplinary skills enable it to produce a distinctive style, emphasised by the strength and discord of gritty materials such as concrete, juxtaposed with the elegance of fine leather.
The living spaces by Dzek draw inspiration from Bauhaus school’s concept of the architectural Gesamtkunstwerk, exploring surface and form. Collaborating with its creative partners, the studio calls upon architects, artists and craft-leaning designers to bring diversity with handmade and industrial manufacturing. Dzek will be exhibiting Marmoreal, an engineered marble suitable for interior and exterior architecture surfaces. The large, aggregate, pre-cast marble terrazzo was devised by British designer Max Lamb.
Innovative surface design studio, Anthony Roussel , specialises in sculptural timber surfaces. The signature wood layering technique, when applied to panels, creates stunning 3D forms, which cast shadows and utilise repeated patterns to enhance interior settings. Each piece is produced and delivered as a bespoke design in the London studio.
Fresh surface design brand, Heliot & Co. , offers decorative surface finishes. The inclusive range is defined by texture, graphic composition, creative innovation and beautification of materials to achieve a high quality, material finish.
With a mission to produce innovative, new and inspiring surface designs, Olivia Aspinall Studio challenges the perceived use of materials. The studio works across various mediums, for example using chalk and charcoal, to create bespoke solid and printing surfaces for interiors and products.
Exploring the creative potential of glass, Float Glass designs and produces bespoke glass pieces for interiors and architectural projects. The textured and gilded surfaces are the work of acute precision, led by the studio’s superior technical knowledge and innovative design skills. A never-before-seen panel created using a new process of glass manufacture will be unveiled at Decorex.
Contemporary design is applied to traditional mouldings to create something extraordinary by Solomon&Wu . The sculptors and designers are at the heart of the studio, developing ideas into products from sketches and conversations. The studio has introduced design to plaster mouldings and continues to experiment with a similar process for hardware, GRP panels, furniture, mirrors and fittings.
The annual collection of relief tiles glazed in a varied palette of colours, in gloss and matt, by tex-tile is a strong example of imprinting textile materials onto clay to form a textured tile. Founded by Candida Wigan, the concept behind the process was influenced by Candida's upbringing in Portugal, a country with a rich history rich in tiles and textiles. At Decorex, the studio will be showing the new Mesh and Skiathos ranges.
