Inner Weather

Cross-disciplinary designer Eloise Maes caught my eye at the Design Academy Eindhoven show during this year’s Dutch Design Week for her subtle and poetic project, Inner Weather.

Tapping into the unique properties of porcelain sand Maes, and fellow collaborators Studio Unfold, have created an air cooler and humidifier. The porcelain absorbs water; the porous structure offering space for water to seep into its micro cavities.

When colour is added to the water the normally invisible movement generated by its flow is revealed, a process that is trapped into the surface once the water evaporates, thus creating a painterly pattern upon the surface.

As such, the ritual of the pouring offers a rewarding meditative response. Maes states it best: “As you cool the room, you cool your mind as well.”
