Greenery is Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2017

08.12.2016

As the entire architect and design community held its breath today, awaiting the announcement of Pantone's Colour of the Year 2017, Material Lab wondered how the colour matching system could possibly follow on from this year's pastel hues of Serenity and Rose Quartz.

Always adhering to the times, both socially and politically, Pantone continued its call for peace with the launch of Greenery – a colour that it believes will reconnect us with nature and bring a larger purpose to our lives.

Some of the team at Mat Lab went along to Pantone's exclusive launch event in London to hear from the people behind Pantone on why Greenery is the colour of choice for next year.

This is what Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute had to say: "While Serenity and Rose Quartz expressed the need for harmony in a chaotic world. Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalise and unite, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose."

As a leading materials studio, it’s our duty to stay ahead of the trends and meet the changing demands of the architecture and design community. Quite rightly, Pantone’s annual event is an essential on our calendar, and one that inspires us to rearrange our hundreds of materials to offer inspiration and advice to those of you looking for complementary colour schemes.

Speaking of home decor and architecture, Pantone states: “Open spaces in interior and exterior design and floor-to-ceiling windows allow the green outdoors to become part of a room’s backdrop and ambiance. Adding Greenery through living walls, terrariums, botanically-themed wallpaper, paint, accent furniture and decor provides respite and breathing space.

“Bringing the outside in, the shade – like the plant life it represents – can improve self-esteem, reduce anxiety and heighten awareness of one’s surroundings.”
