Design duo Ward van Gemert and Adriaan van der Ploeg have fused art and interiors to create Showdown Carpets – a collection of bold floor coverings made from foam.
Working out of their Rotterdam-based design studio NIGHTSHOP, the designers fill syringes with brightly coloured liquid urethane foam, before piping into various shapes and patterns.
Once the finished pieces are dry they become solid and take on a practical function, as well as existing as a piece of art in their own right.
The designers explain their inspiration behind the project: “The Showdown Carpets by NIGHTSHOP are experiments in colour and pattern, and are made from soft urethane foam. The carpets are all handmade in Rotterdam. Showdown is also a song by famous seventies rockband Thin Lizzy. This is not a coincidence. It is after all an open secret that the boys from NIGHTSHOP occasionally listen to them while making the carpets.”
