If you get chance to visit Somerset House this month, then you should definitely take a look at Chakraview – a stunning installation by the India Design Forum (IDF) for the inaugral London Design Biennale .
Weaving together India’s cultural heritage, using traditional textiles and ancient mythology with modern design innovations, the piece by artists and designers Sumant Jayakrishnan, Avinash Kumar, Hanif Kureshi and Rutva Trivedi successfully portrays a sense of modern India, and presents a unique blend of the social, political and religious climates that will always characterise the colourful Asian country.
Established in 2012, IDF was created by Rajshree Pathy as a platform to promote innovative design and create an awareness of the power of design in India. Their vision is to form a modern day collaboration between India’s traditional heritage and its emerging contemporary design through innovation and technology.
Speaking of the installation, Rajshree said: "We hope the audience will pause for a while in wonderment at the abundance of India, the myriad emotions that are conveyed through this work and then be startled and perhaps leave with a bit of the soul of India in their hearts forever."
Themed ‘Utopia by Design’, this year's biennale features further installations by architects, designers, scientists, writers and artists from over 30 countries exploring their own definitions of how ‘The World Reimagines the World’.
