With this year’s installment of Clerkenwell Design Week kicking off tomorrow, we’ve scoured the event listings for the talks, installations and exhibitions we’ll be attending between 21 and 23 May.
Every year seems to top the previous in terms of the sheer amount of creativity on show, and with it being Clerkenwell Design Week’s 10th anniversary, we’re eager to see what 2019 has to offer. Following a stellar Milan Design Week last month, we’re sure to come away feeling invigorated and inspired for the season ahead. Here are our top five must-see picks to help plan your schedule:
BottleHouse™ by small & WSP Design Studio
In response to the world’s rising levels of waste plastic, small and WSP Design Studio have teamed up for the installation, BottleHouse™. Using discarded, empty plastic bottles in a feat of impressive architectural engineering, the creative duo has created a temporary structure that acts as a shelter for those that need it.
Herman Miller’s Aeron Hockey
Marking 25 years since the launch of the iconic Aeron chair, Herman Miller is bringing its fun, fast-paced workplace-based sport – office hockey – to Clerkenwell’s Brewhouse Yard. The game was born as a result of the industry-altering pellicle suspension of the design, and has been used in team building exercises ever since. If you fancy your chances on the field, just turn up and take a seat.
Once Upon A Time
Drawing on Clerkenwell’s colourful past, students from the UAL Chelsea College of Art has transformed stories from six locations into a series of graphic illustrations. Exhibited on walls, floors and doors, you’ll need to have a keen eye to spot them all.
Material Matters Live
(Wednesday 22 May, 12pm - 1pm)
Translating the popular Material Matters podcast from British design writer and critic Grant Gibson to the stage, this live event will include a 30-minute interview with designer Gareth Neal. Discussion will take place around Gareth’s unique craft, which combines woodworking skills with digital technology.
WOD presents Power Women of Design
(Wednesday 22 May, 2pm - 3pm)
A discussion not to be missed – WOD (Women in Office Design) presents an important conversation between accomplished women making waves in the design world. Diversity, inclusion and the future of female designers will all be unpicked by the impressive panel, chaired by Harsha Kotak.
